Hey Short Stuff!

Are you one that’s BFF’s with your tailor? Always wishing science would finally come up with a way to be able to get your knees done to add a few extra inches? If you’re a petite, your height can make you feel like you’re seriously restricted to your style, however, your best bet is to rely on a few shrewd fashion tips to ‘fake’ those extra inches. Below I’ll outline on how to appear taller using the fashion you have right in your own closet!

1. Dare to Flare.

image3Just buy those flared jeans you keep setting down already, they’re made for you! Fitted jeans with an indefinite flare at the bottom will create the illusion of a longer leg-especially if you pair them up with some heels and the hem hits the top of your shoe. Although  majority of all flared jeans create the illusion of a longer leg, the trick here is to keep the fit of the jean super slim through the leg, and to make sure the waistband hits your natural waist- don’t go any lower. For  optimal height, be sure to pair your flares with a waist length top or a blouse you can tuck in.

2. Move Over Moms! We’re Saying Hell Yes to High-Waist Bottoms!

image5Due to the unfortunate Jessica Simpson style mishap, high-waist bottoms can get a bad rep. But when worn correctly they can trick the eye into thinking you’re taller by elongating your lower body. Oh yea! Whether it’s pants, shorts, or skirts, just be sure to make the elevated waist visible by tucking in a blouse or opting for a crop top.

3. Don’t Knock It Till You Try It -Maxi Skirts.

It’s a common fashion mythology that small women simply cannot wear floor grazing skirts or dresses, but it’s been proven false! In fact, a well cut maxi-skirt can actually give the appearance of looking taller. Take Mary-Kate Olsen, Rachel Bilson, and Nicole Richie for example, all petite women under 5’3”, and provide evidence that they appear taller than what they really are. Start out by making sure the skirt’s hemline is as long as it can be without you tripping on it-add a pair of wedges or heels underneath. Choose a solid version that skims the length of your body, which will then create a long vertical line(stray away from anything with thick pleats or a lot of layers.) Be sure to keep your top fitted, so you don’t drowned in the fabric. Opt for a T-shirt you can tuck in with a cropped motto jacket.

4. Go Shortie, Go Short.

image7If you’re petite it’s just a fact that when it comes to skirts or dresses you need to either go long or short. So if you’re gonna go short, go short, there’s no in between- try to avoid calf length or knee lengths. Since mini skirts show more leg it helps create the illusion of a longer leg. Pair it up with a cute top and some sky high platforms!

5. Wear All One Color.

image8Using color to enhance the illusion of height is actually a pretty darn good effective strategy that many don’t think of as it creates a vertical line. Wearing head- to- toe black is of course the chicest option, but don’t be scared to go out of the box! Try some saturated hues-a look that’s so in right now, or be bold and wear something vibrant. The key to monochrome dressing is to keep the silhouette crisp and tailored! Jumpsuits work great for this, and it’s much easier than having to find a matching blue top that doesn’t clash with the blue bottom, because if there’s one thing I hate, it’s when my blacks don’t match(or any color at that.)

6. Vertical Stripes

image10It’s one of the oldest tricks in the fashion books for a reason. Vertical stripes create long lines, therefore making you look, well, longer! Don’t fear that only a vertical stripe blouse will be able to do the trick, dresses, pants, playsuits, and skirts do it too!

7. Wear V-Necks

Flynn-Skye-Holiday-Lulu-Top-Dahlia-Stripe-1If I had figured this out years ago I would’ve never had mixed feeling about V-necks. But it’s true, tops with plunging V necklines give the illusion of a longer leaner torso. And they’re trending now more than ever, so keep that in mind your next shopping trip!

8. Shoes Matter

image14Heels with a low-cut vamp are your best friend, and mine too. They instantly elongate your legs and make them look slimmer while wearing shorts, skirts or dresses. This is a small trick that may just change the way you shoe shop. Also, try wearing pointy flats. Since nobody can be expected to wear sky high heels everyday every petite girl should invest in some pointy flats. Why you ask? It’s a known fact that pointed toe shoes lengthen your leg line.

9. Stick With Skinny Belts

When it comes to belts short girls should ALWAYS opt for a skinny version. It helps define your natural waist in the most flattering way possible. Where as a thick belt cuts you in half and causes you to look shorter. No bueno.

10. Ditch The Huge Bag

For petite girls it’s smart to appropriately scale your accessories to your body size. That means get rid of that gigantic shoulder bag! Besides the fact the oversized shoulder bag hasn’t been trending since 2010, here else is why you should ditch it: Every time you cause the eye to take in width, you reduce the amount of height it takes in. That means clutches, small totes, cross body bags are you best bet.

11. Top It Or Chop It

Put away that flatiron and rock a top knot! Obvious, yea, but piling you hair on top of your head really does give a taller impression! Yet again creating a more vertical line. Same with volume, it adds inches. Or how about chopping off a few inches and go for a wavy lob-that’s a long bob. Long hair can drag a petite girl down while shorter hair does the opposite! It’s the best option that shows off your shoulders and neckline which makes you appear taller, plus it’s oh so chic! Both tricks helped these celebs out who are both only 5’1”.

12. Be Mindful To Proportion

tailoredThe most important key to them all when you’re petite! It’s vital to be sure all your clothes fit properly-this is where a good tailor comes in handy. Want to wear a blazer or jacket? Always make sure the seams sit best at the bony tops of your shoulders and that the sleeves hit exactly at your wrist. Trying cropped pants? Just make sure they’re not too cropped and that the hem hits the ankle area(skinny cropped pants suit you best.) I also suggest small gals should avoid capri pants because they cut the leg awkwardly.
